Students respond to a series of statements about ‘what is family?’ by choosing to stand on a continuum – strongly agree to strongly disagree.
  • Use handout – Family – Human Continuum. Then as a class brainstorm to create a class definition of the term ‘family.
  • Use handout ‘Defining the term ‘family’ and ‘Family. A Family is…’
  • To complete the lesson ask students to write a written reflection in their workbooks using the following questions as a guide:
    • Write one sentence in reply to each of the questions below: •
      • What does it mean to belong to a family?
      • What makes your family special?
      • How are families alike?
      • How are they different?
      • When do you feel your family is most a family?
      • What makes a family live and grow?
      • What weakens or hurts families?
      • What do you think you can do to help your family grow happier?

In groups of 4 talk about your family, family history, family makeup, interesting family backgrounds, stories about fun times, special celebrations. Share some of the stories you heard from others in your group with the class.

Now, draw each of the members of your family (or extended family) using a symbol to represent each person.
The symbol should reflect the image you have of that family member and the relationship you have with him/her.


A Mother’s Reflection: Read aloud to the class.


When finished distribute worksheet with the affirmations. Ask students to imagine that their mother has been asked to provide a reflection on the things she loves about them. (you may need to open the family member up to father, grandparent, guardian depending on classroom circumstance. Ask students to imagine that they are their mother (or other) and complete the affirmation sheet – commenting on the good qualities their mother would see in them.

2. Sing. Be aware of the neighbors.
3. Dance. No, not me, but you can do that.
4. Compliment someone.

12. Think of somebody who you love. No, it's not me this time. Please think of somebody else.
13. Think about how lucky number this is.
14. Read books. Send me a short e-mail about your favorite one and the reason why it is the one.
15. Listen to classical music.
16. Talk to a butterfly or any other beautiful creature outside.
17. Exercise. Lifting up a beer can does not count.
18. Give compliments to those around you.
19. What makes you unique?..........
20. What is your strongest quality?

Brainstorm a list of house rules that exist in students’ family environments.
  • Why do they think these rules exist? Are they fair?
  • What rules would they like to change.
  • How many students help around the house.
  • Ask students to complete the ‘Chore Chart’.

    • Indulgent: more responsive than demanding, give kids what they want •
    • Authoritarian: expect orders to be obeyed without explanation •
    • Authoritative: monitor and impart clear instructions but not restrictive •
    • Uninvolved: don’t expect much and don’t pay much attention
  • Give examples of what you would consider evidence of one particular style (eg. Have no curfew or expected time to be home) •
  • If you were a parent, what particular parenting style would you hope to be?
  • Identify you own parent’s style.

    • where can stuff be put so it won't be touched?
    • privacy rules for Facebook, SMS messages, phone messages, phone calls, letters, bills, conversations (with friends, with a parent, with a brother or sister).
  • A "To do list" to ensure you stay close to your family
